President Bola Tinubu has expressed the Federal Government’s support for universities, especially in strengthening Nigeria’s energy sector. He made this statement at the 4th convocation of the Federal University of Petroleum Resources (FUPRE) in Effurun, Delta State.
Tinubu, represented by Professor Emmanuel Adigio, Vice-Chancellor of the Nigerian Maritime University, Okerenkoko, urged all stakeholders to support FUPRE. He said FUPRE should become a global leader in energy education and innovation. He highlighted the university’s role in transforming Nigeria into an energy-driven economy.
Tinubu called on the graduates to lead the transformation of Nigeria and Africa, reminding them of their responsibility to develop solutions for the continent’s energy challenges. He further stressed that the youth must take the lead in energy development.
Professor Akpofure Rim-Rukeh, Vice-Chancellor of FUPRE, said the convocation marked the end of his five-year tenure. He announced that during his tenure, 3,369 students graduated, with 2,683 undergraduates and 686 postgraduates still in session.
He also shared that 51 students graduated with first-class honours, and six received honorary degrees for their exceptional contributions.
Oba Babatunde Ajayi, Chancellor of FUPRE, praised the staff and students for raising the university’s standards since its founding in 2007. He expressed confidence that FUPRE would continue to excel in providing high-quality education.
The convocation marked a milestone for FUPRE and highlighted the Federal Government’s support for the university and its focus on energy education. The event demonstrated the growing importance of energy education in Nigeria’s development. The university’s progress reflects the nation’s commitment to training the next generation of energy leaders.
