Togo Exempts EVs from Import Taxes

  • Togo exempts electric vehicles from paying tariffs
  • Ministries of Environment and Trade, in partnership with OTR, approves the initiative
  • The initiatives reduce C02 and provide about 2,000 jobs

The brand-new initiative has been widely anticipated in Togo’s mobility industry. Electric vehicles are exempt from paying import tariffs in this West African country. This legislation, which is part of the government’s intention to speed up the growth of the green economy, mandates that any vehicle that does not utilize diesel or gasoline will now require State approval to enter the country legally and peacefully.

The approval will be provided jointly by the Ministries of Environment and Trade, in partnership with the Togolese Revenue Office (OTR), as part of President Faure Gnassingbé’s decree regarding business operators, which was signed on August 11, 2021.

For the completion of customs clearance formalities for electric or hybrid vehicles, as well as batteries intended for their power supply, an approval issued by a joint order of the Minister of Trade and the Minister of the Environment is required at the customs cordon,” explains the Commissioner-General of the OTR, Adedzé Kodjo.

Still, as part of Togo’s pro-electric mobility fiscal strategy, the executive, led by Victoire Tomegah-Dogbé, has ordered a 100% customs duty refund to import new electric motorcycles (two-wheeled vehicles) for the coming year.
