The Togolese government has awarded a €45 million contract to install 50,000 solar street lamps in rural communities to Sunna Design. The funding for the street lamps is being provided by the General Directorate of the French Treasury as part of the Cizo project, which aims to electrify 500,000 rural households. The Togolese authorities believe that Sunna Design and its solar lighting expertise indicate the role clean energy plays in the company’s national development policies and highlights the importance of the Cizo project.
Under the agreement, the French company Sunna Design will install the solar street lamps over 24 months and provide system maintenance for 12 years. Sunna solutions can also integrate an ecosystem of IoT applications powered by its intelligent solar batteries. Sunna Design also plans to provide internet access to rural communities via its solar streetlights.
Cina Lawson, the Togolese Minister of Digital Economy and Technological Innovation, notes that “the project will combine decentralised energy and broadband connectivity to provide both public lighting and internet access to the populations.” “It complements our vision towards accelerating the convergence between energy and digital technology, which we will initiate by deploying optical fibre on the electric network,” lawson added.
