Total Eren, a French renewable power producer, has signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) for the construction of a 2 GW plus solar park. The solar project’s output is to be used to power a 1 GW green hydrogen production facility in the Nothern part of Australia.
The company is making a proposition for the installation of the park near Darwin, the capital city of the Northern Territory. The pact with the local government, which was signed on Monday, details the collaboration between the authorities and Total Eren.
The facility, also called the Darwin H2 Hub, is home to a huge electrolyser enabling the production of more than 80,000 tonnes of green hydrogen every year. The output is planned to be offered both to domestic and international companies. The massive scheme’s photovoltaic (PV) component will span a total area of 4,000 acres (1,619 ha).
Total Eren, the renewable energy arm of French energy group TotalEnergies, estimates that the project has the potential to create over 2,000 jobs during construction and 175 ongoing jobs.
“Our plan is to accelerate the development of the project to supply green hydrogen and also the opportunity to provide renewable energy, which supports the decarbonisation plans for energy-intensive industries in the Territory,” said Kam Ho, managing director of Total Eren Australia.
Total Eren operates more than 3.5 GW of wind and solar PV capacity globally.
