Saudi Arabia’s renewable energy sector took a major step forward by signing a 25-year Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) for the 300 MW Rabigh 2 solar project. TotalEnergies and Aljomaih Energy & Water Company (AEW) formed a consortium and signed a deal with the Saudi Power Procurement Company (SPPC) to deliver the project, which will come online in 2026.
Rabigh 2 forms part of the fifth phase of Saudi Arabia’s National Renewable Energy Program (NREP). The Ministry of Energy drives this initiative, aiming to diversify the Kingdom’s energy sources under Vision 2030. NREP targets a balanced energy mix, splitting electricity generation equally between natural gas and renewables by 2030.
TotalEnergies CEO Patrick Pouyanné emphasised the project as part of the company’s strategy to support oil-producing nations in transitioning to clean energy. He highlighted that the project will help TotalEnergies cut emissions and boost renewable electricity production.
Ibrahim Al Jomaih, Chairman of AEW, underscored the project’s importance to Saudi Arabia’s Green Initiative. The initiative pushes the country to reduce reliance on fossil fuels and lower carbon emissions. He noted that the partnership with TotalEnergies leverages AEW’s local expertise with TotalEnergies’ global resources, driving the energy transition forward in Saudi Arabia.
Rabigh 2 will connect directly to Saudi Arabia’s electrical grid. The project will create jobs, lower carbon emissions, and use advanced technology for high efficiency and sustainability in energy production.
TotalEnergies continues to advance other renewable projects in the Kingdom, including the 119 MW Wadi Al Dawasir solar plant, which begins operations in early 2025. These projects showcase TotalEnergies’ dedication to expanding the renewable energy landscape in Saudi Arabia.
