TotalEnergies has officially launched commercial operations at two major solar farms, Danish Fields and Cottonwood, in southeast Texas. These projects, which have a combined capacity of 1.2 gigawatts (GW), contribute to the company’s broader renewable energy portfolio of 4 GW across the state.
Danish Fields, TotalEnergies’ largest solar farm in the US, boasts an impressive capacity of 720 megawatts-peak (MWp) and approximately 1.4 million photovoltaic panels. A significant highlight of this project is its 225-megawatt-hour (MWh) battery storage system, supplied by Saft, a subsidiary of TotalEnergies.
Around 70% of Danish Fields’ capacity is secured through long-term Corporate Power Purchase Agreements (CPPAs) with prominent companies such as Saint-Gobain. The remaining 30% of the energy generated will power TotalEnergies’ industrial operations in the US Gulf Coast region.
The Cottonwood solar farm, which has a capacity of 455 MWp and includes 847,000 solar panels, is expected to commence operations by 2025. Like Danish Fields, Cottonwood will incorporate a 225 MWh battery storage system.
The electricity generated at this site will support decarbonisation efforts for companies like LyondellBasell and Saint-Gobain through long-term PPAs, aligning with their sustainability goals.
Olivier Jouny, Senior Vice President of Renewables at TotalEnergies, emphasised the significance of these projects, stating, “These projects highlight TotalEnergies’ commitment to providing renewable electricity to support our clients’ decarbonisation goals as well as our own.”
This commitment reflects a broader trend within the energy sector towards sustainable practices and reduced carbon footprints as companies increasingly seek renewable energy sources to meet their operational needs and environmental targets.
