- TotalEnergies and OQ Alternative Energy will develop two wind farms and a solar power plant in Oman with a combined 300 MW capacity, set to begin production by 2026.
- The projects will supply 1.4 TWh of electricity annually through long-term PPAs with Petroleum Development Oman (PDO).
- TotalEnergies plans to invest $5 billion annually in low-carbon energy from 2025 to 2030, aiming to reach 100 GW of renewable capacity by 2030.
TotalEnergies has teamed up with OQ Alternative Energy, a subsidiary of Oman’s OQ Group, to develop two wind farms and a solar power plant in Oman. These renewable energy projects will deliver a combined capacity of 300 megawatts (MW) and aim to start production by 2026.
The North Solar plant will rise in the Saih Nihaydah region in northern Oman. The Riyah-1 and Riyah-2 wind farms will take shape in the southern oil fields of Amin and West Nimr. Together, these facilities will generate 1.4 terawatt-hours (TWh) of electricity annually once operational.
OQ Alternative Energy holds a 51% stake in the project, while TotalEnergies owns 49%. Both companies will supply electricity under long-term power purchase agreements (PPA) with Petroleum Development Oman (PDO), a major oil exploration and production player in Oman.
Construction for these projects will start in 2025, and operations are expected to follow in 2026. Through this initiative, TotalEnergies aims to boost its renewable electricity production.
By 2024, TotalEnergies reached a gross installed capacity of 27 gigawatts (GW), an increase from 22 GW in 2023. The company plans to hit 35 GW by 2025 and targets 100 GW by 2030.
CEO Patrick Pouyanné plans to invest $5 billion annually in low-carbon energy and electricity from 2025 to 2030, aiming for a 12% return on these investments by 2030, up from the current 10%.
Unlike Shell and BP, which have reduced renewable energy investments, TotalEnergies continues to expand its clean energy portfolio. The company maintains a dual focus on growing both renewable electricity and traditional oil and gas activities.
These projects mark a significant step in Oman’s energy diversification, supporting the country’s renewable energy goals. Wind farms and solar plants will reduce reliance on fossil fuels, contributing to a more sustainable energy future.
