TotalEnergies to Develop a 30MW Floating Wind Pilot Project 

  • TotalEnergies, BW Ideol, and Qair are partners on the project.
  • The project will be connected to the transmission network system operator RTE through a subsea cable.

TotalEnergies has announced that the construction of the 30MW EolMed floating wind pilot project is set to commence, and the project is expected to start delivering power by 2024.

This development became public on Tuesday after a final investment decision (FID) was taken on the demo scheme. TotalEnergies will team up in partnership with French floating wind technology developer BW Ideol and local renewable energy producer Qair.

Plans are that the offshore wind farm will be situated 18 km off Gruissan, a town on the western part of the Frensch south coast in Occitania region. Three 10MW turbines will be mounted steel floats made by local forms Matiere and Ponticelli. The pilot plant project will be connected to the transmission network system operator RTE through a subsea cable.

BW Ideol and Qair have been partnering since 2016 and in the early stages of winning a French government call for the project.In 2020, TotalEnergies bought a 20% interest and BW Ideol acquired a 5% stake in the later part of 2021.
