- Transmission line to connect Iraq and Turkey through Kurdistan Region
The Ministry of Electricity, Kurdistan region, has announced a transmission line to connect the Kurdistan region, Iraq and Turkey. The 400kV transmission project will link Iraq with Turkey through the Kurdistan region. Electricity Minister Omid Ahmed stated that the project would ensure that Iraq’s purchase of electricity from Turkey will address ”the problems of voltage and load on the Kurdistan region’s electricity network.”
Iraq is currently experiencing a heatwave with temperatures reaching over 50 degrees celsius, causing severe electricity shortages and increased power outages in the country, leading to mass protests across several cities. In addition, the Iraqi grid suffers from poor maintenance and an increase in terrorist attacks in recent times. Iraqi Minister of Energy resigned following a Twitter campaign protesting his poor management of the sector.
