- TCN faces a setback as the transmission tower collapses during cable stringing.
- Vigilant efforts are underway to dismantle and reconstruct the collapsed tower.
- Vandalism on multiple transmission lines adds to challenges; the public is urged to report suspicious activity promptly.
The Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) encountered a significant setback in its ongoing mission to restore electricity supply to the North East region. The latest blow came with the collapse of tower T290 along the Jos—Gombe 330kV transmission line. According to a May 27 statement via the TCN’s X handle, this happened during the cable stringing process.
This incident happened as contractors were engaged in the final phase of stringing the cable, which is critical for the timely completion of the power restoration project.
Despite persistent security challenges in the area, TCN and its contracted workforce demonstrated unwavering commitment and dedication to the task. Under stringent time constraints, the teams tirelessly toiled from 6 a.m. to late evenings. Security personnel escorted them to ensure their safety while extending their working hours until 10 p.m.
While TCN and its partners have previously executed similar projects with commendable success rates across different regions of the country, the collapse of the fourth tower presents an unforeseen and considerable setback, derailing the meticulously planned efforts to restore power expeditiously.
Meanwhile, efforts are underway as TCN’s contracted workforce diligently works to dismantle the collapsed tower, paving the way for its reconstruction and subsequent cable stringing. However, the challenges continue. TCN’s vigilance teams have reported vandalism along other regional key transmission lines.
Towers T1690, T1691, and T1692 along the Biu—Danbua 132kV transmission line have been vandalized, allowing the perpetrators to abscond with 16 spans of conductors.
In a parallel development, TCN’s lines patrol team uncovered further vandalism earlier this morning. Discovering sabotage on tower T540 along the Makurdi – Jos 330kV double circuit transmission line. Although sections of the building have been removed, prompt action has been initiated to avert its imminent collapse. Which is through emergency repair measures.
Despite the setbacks, TCN remains resolute in restoring a regular bulk power supply to the affected regions. The company emphasises the importance of collective vigilance and urges the public to report any suspected acts of vandalism promptly to safeguard the integrity of critical infrastructure assets.
