- Transport Secretary Mark Harper MP visited Alfanar’s Teesside site amid UK aviation and SAF industry announcements.
- Alfanar’s £1.5 billion waste-to-SAF facility, Lighthouse Green Fuels, is a major project in Teesside.
Transport Secretary Mark Harper MP visited Alfanar’s Teesside site as the UK Government announced measures for UK aviation and the SAF industry. Alfanar, a global renewables company, is developing a £1.5 billion waste-to-SAF facility called Lighthouse Green Fuels (LGF) in Teesside.
The Secretary toured the LGF facility with Phil Forster, Teesside International Airport’s managing director. LGF is Europe’s largest SAF project and could be operational by 2028. The project will use household and commercial waste and other non-recyclable waste feedstocks.
The resulting fuel will be compatible with today’s aircraft without modifications. LGF aims to produce 175 million litres annually, enough to fuel 2,500 long-haul or 25,000 short-haul flights annually.
Transport Secretary Mark Harper MP said sustainable aviation fuel protects UK aviation, jobs, and travel. Mishal Almutlaq, Alfanar’s Chief Investment Officer, welcomed the announcement. He believes the UK can lead in green aviation fuel production but stresses the need for a SAF revenue support mechanism to meet the Government’s target of five SAF plants by 2025.
