Trina Solar, SOLA, WBHO to Develop 135MW Solar Project in SA

  • Trina Solar will supply 205,161 panels for the project, while SOLA and WBHO Construction’s joint venture will ensure the project’s execution.
  • The solar project partners have scheduled the project for completion by the end of 2024.

Trina Solar, a solar energy provider, SOLA, a renewable energy firm and Wilson Bayly Holmes-Ovcon (WBHO) will collaborate to develop the 135 megawatts (MW) Merak 1 project. The project will supply solar power to the operations of the mining company, African Rainbow Minerals.

With this collaboration, Trina Solar will supply 205,161 panels of its Vertex modules for the Merak 1 project, while SOLA and WBHO Construction’s joint venture will ensure the project’s execution.

The Regional Director of Trina Solar, Sothern Africa, Zaheer Khan, said, “This collaboration showcases Trina Solar’s commitment to advancing clean energy solutions tailored to the country’s industrial needs and delivering high-power, high-efficiency and reliable solar solutions.”

In addition, the project is scheduled for completion by the end of 2024. TrinaSolar Co., Ltd., established in 1997, mainly engages in photovoltaic (PV) products, PV systems and smart energy. The company’s PV products include research and development (R&D), as well as production and sales of PV modules. 

These PV systems consist of power stations and system products. Also, smart energy mainly comprises PV power generation and operation & maintenance, smart solutions for energy storage, smart microgrids, and development and sales of multi-energy systems. 

Trina Solar commits to leading the way in smart solar energy solutions and facilitating the transformation of new power systems for a net-zero future. In November 2023, the firm disclosed plans to invest an additional $420 million in Vietnam’s northern province of Thai Nguyen.

This brings the total investment in the country to nearly $900 million. Also, Trina Solar announced that it would invest $400 million in a new plant in Vietnam.
