- The pilot phase of the project will see the installation of 10 EV charging stations across Tunisia.
- Tunisia had also initiated a project to increase EVs and hybrid vehicles’ adoption to 10 per cent of new registration between 2019-2025.
Tunisia is looking to promote the adoption of electric vehicles (EV) in the country. The National Petroleum Distribution Company (AGIL) and the Tunisian Electricity and Gas Company (STEG) have signed a Memorandum of Understanding to develop EV charging stations. Under this MoU, both companies will work together to set up the needed infrastructure for the charging stations, operated by AGIL.
10 AGIL service stations will be installed in the pilot phase of the project. Of these, 6 will be located in the 6 largest governorates such as Tunis, Sousse and Sfax. The other 4 stations will be located on highways. According to Nabil Smida, CEO of AGIL, the stations will be able to guarantee up to 300 kilometres of autonomy with only 20 minutes of recharging.”

The Tunisian government in 2018 had initiated a project to increase the number of electric vehicles in the country over the period 2019 – 2025. The aim is to add 70,000 new vehicles ( 50,000 electric and 20,000 hybrid vehicles) during this time.
Tunisia has increasingly moved to reduce its dependency on fossil fuel through the increased adoption of cleaner options. The country aims to decrease it’s carbon emissions by 40 per cent in 2030 compared to 2010 per the Paris Climate Agreement.
