TUNISIA: Feasibility Studies Ongoing for the Italy-Tunisia Interconnector

Feasibility studies are currently underway for the Italy-Tunisia interconnector cable. The cable aims to connect both continents through an underwater High-Voltage Direct Current (HVDC) interconnector. RINA S.P.A. is carrying out the project in a joint venture with Tunisian firm Comete. The project will connect the Tunisian grid with its Italian counterpart.

The feasibility study began in April 2021 and is set to run for a period of one year. The scope of the study is to identify the possible landfills for the project in both countries.  In addition, the study will establish possible routes for the underwater section, identifying and evaluating possible constraints and obstacles.

The Italy-Tunisia interconnector will enable deeper integration of electricity markets in the Mediterranean area, significantly improving connections between the North African countries and Europe. According to the World Bank, the project will close the Europe-Maghreb network loop that runs from Morocco, Spain, France, Italy, Tunisia, and Algeria.
