- The APST project in Tunisia has come to a close.
- The project commenced in 2017 and was implemented by GIZ and the Tunisian Ministry of Industry, Energy and Mines.
- The project has enabled the development of solar projects with the cheapest tariffs in Africa.
The ‘Support to the Tunisian Solar Plan’ (APST) project, which supported the set up of effective and efficient processes for the piloting, the achievement of the Tunisian Solar Plan, has closed. The project aimed to help Tunisia achieve its 2030 goal of 30% renewable energy contribution to the energy mix.
The programme was implemented in 2017 by the German Cooperation Agency (GIZ) and the Ministry of Industry, Energy and Mines, in collaboration with National Agency for Energy Management (ANME) and the Tunisian Electricity and Gas Company (STEG).
Mohsen Mansouri, Head of the Cabinet of the Minister of Industry, Energy and Mines, noted that the project has significantly contributed to developing the renewable energy sector in Tunisia. He noted that under the APST project, several initiatives were implemented, including the calls for tenders under concessions (500MW), development of several basic studies that informed the national plan of electricity production from renewable energies 2021-2025, and capacity building for experts from STEG and the Tunisian private sector.
The Director-General of Electricity and Energy Transition at the Ministry of Industry, Belhassen Chiboub, added that the support from the German government had enabled the country to have the best solar power tariff in Africa (the 200MW Tataouine solar project).
