- U.S. and China Secure Key Climate Agreements Ahead of COP28 in Dubai.
- Intensive talks between John Kerry and Xie Zhenhua resulted in solid understanding.
The United States and China have reached key climate agreements ahead of COP28 in Dubai. U.S. climate envoy John Kerry announced the progress after intensive talks with Chinese counterpart Xie Zhenhua in California. Kerry described the discussions as stern and severe, acknowledging moments of despair but emphasising the emergence of solid understandings.
These agreements aim to bolster COP discussions and position both nations to contribute significantly to global renewable energy initiatives. China’s focus at COP28 will be scrutinised for its ongoing construction of coal-fired power plants and reluctance to commit to specific fossil fuel reduction targets. Despite having 360 gigawatts of coal-fired power capacity in the pipeline, Kerry noted China’s efforts to transition away from coal while stressing the global irresponsibility of funding such projects anywhere in the world.
