- India and Uganda pledged to strengthen their cooperation in various sectors following a three-day working visit in Kampala.
- Dr Jaishankar congratulated Uganda on assuming the chairship of the Non-Aligned Movement (NAM) on behalf of Africa for the period from 2023 to 2025.
Dr Jaishankar arrived in the Ugandan capital Kampala on Monday afternoon and met with President Yoweri Museveni at his farm home in western Uganda. They discussed cooperation in trade and investment, infrastructure, energy, defence, health, digital and agricultural domains. India’s top diplomat also said he met Uganda’s Foreign Minister, Gen. Jeje Odongo and Minister of Defence and Veterans Affairs, Vincent Ssempijja.
Dr Jaishankar congratulated Uganda on assuming the chairship of the Non-Aligned Movement (NAM) on behalf of Africa for the period from 2023 to 2025. All African countries, save for South Sudan, are members of the NAM.
The Non-Aligned Movement was formed in 1961 during the end of the colonial system, and the independence struggles globally and at the height of the Cold War. The NAM is composed of 120 member states from the developing world and is the largest forum for political coordination and consultation after and within the United Nations. It is a forum that is not formally aligned with or against any major power bloc. While in Uganda, Dr Jaishankar also participated in the launch of the Tulsi Ghat Restoration Project in Varanasi.
