- The Nyamwamba II hydropower facility in Kasese, western Uganda, is being commissioned by Serengeti Energy.
- The run-of-river facility, which is connected to Uganda’s national grid, has a capacity of 7.8MW.
Serengeti Energy, based in Nairobi, Kenya, has just commissioned a run-of-river power plant to increase Uganda’s installed energy capacity by 7.8MW. The facility is located on the Nyamwamba River in western Uganda’s Kasese district.
The plant’s construction began in 2019. The building site “had to deal with several issues due to the Covid-19 outbreak.” “The project development and construction teams, and their consultants, were up to the task and surmounted the hurdles to execute the project effectively,” claims Chris Bale’s company. Serengeti Energy also operates the 9.2MW Nyamwamba I hydropower project, located upstream of the new facility.
The Uganda Electricity Transmission Company Limited (UETCL) will purchase the electricity generated by the run-of-river plant. The electricity is routed into Uganda’s national grid through the Nkenda substation, which supplies several industrial load centres in western Uganda and will serve as a hub for future electrical exports to the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC). Although financial close is projected in the second quarter of 2022, the project requires a $22 million investment.
