The government of Uganda has announced its plans to connect at least 235,000 households to the national grid. In a statement issued by the Minister of Energy and Mineral Development, Ruth Nankabirwa, the connection project will be concluded by the end of the month. The government began implementing the free electricity connection policy in the country.
“Procurement of 234,989 no-pole connection material is ongoing, and these materials are expected in [this month] August,” she said, adding: “This is, therefore, to confirm government’s commitment to increase access to clean energy in line with the National Development Plan III.” the statement read.
Speaking on the project, the Managing Director UMEME, Mr Selestino Babungi, said applications would be treated on a first-come, first-serve basis. ”The target is to have cleared at least 87,500 by October,” Babungi said.
According to Babungi, at least 40,000 households had applied for self-funded connections in the last few months.
