President Yoweri Museveni said Uganda would cooperate with Algeria in nuclear energy use. On a State visit to Algeria, President Museveni toured the Nuclear Research Center of Algiers on Monday and congratulated the North African country for taking the right steps in nuclear physics and energy.
Museveni said, “Nuclear energy helps in medicine, agriculture, energy, and propulsion. Uganda already has a nuclear energy unit, and we shall collaborate with the Nuclear Research Center here on specific areas of cooperation.”
Early this year, the President of South Korea, Yoon Suk-year, sent a team of nuclear energy experts to Uganda to discuss investment prospects in the country’s nuclear energy development. The Korean team of experts and investors talked with President Museveni and the Ministry of Energy officials to pave the way for constructing a $9 billion (sh33 trillion) nuclear power plant in Uganda.
The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) cleared the power plant project in May last year, but Uganda had not yet secured an investor. Uganda signed a five-year agreement with the IAEA to develop the nuclear power plant in May last year.
