UK Renewable Energy Generation Surpass Fossil’s for First Time

  • The UK’s renewable energy generation surpassed fossil fuel generation for the first time last year.
  • The statistics show that in 2020 renewable energy provided 43 per cent of all electricity in the UK.
  • Renewables and nuclear-generated 59 per cent of the total energy.
According to data from the UK Government’s Department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy’s Energy Trends report, renewable energy generation has surpassed fossil fuel generation for the first time. The statistics show that in 2020 renewable energy provided 43 per cent of all electricity in the UK, while fossil fuels accounted for 38.5 per cent.

The report detail that wind provided most of the renewable energy, providing about 24.2% of the UK’s electricity needs (13% – offshore; 11.2% -onshore), representing an 18 per cent increase from 2019 in total renewables energy generation was up 11 per cent from 2019.
