The US government has officially designated the Morro Bay Wind Energy Area for wind turbine installation off the California coastline and is seeking public input before issuing an Environmental Assessment (EA).
The specific area consists of around 240,898 acres (97,488 ha) of land located roughly 20 miles (32.2 km) off the coast of Morro Bay in central California.
Through the Bureau of Ocean Energy Management (BOEM), a 60-day public comment period was launched on November 12. In addition, the agency said it would organise two virtual public meetings to gather feedback which it will need to prepare an EA.
The environmental review process will consider the potential impacts from conducting biological and geophysical surveys and activities such as the installation of meteorological buoys within the specific area. BOEM’s draft EA will be open for public review and comments, which will help the agency determine whether to move forward with a proposed lease sale.
