US Govt. to Provide $25m for Renewable Energy Deployment in Gambia

  • MCC to grant $25m for renewable energy electrification
  • The funding is a product of COP26 negotiations

The United States Government’s Millennium Challenge Corporation (MCC) has signed a $25 million investment program collaborating with the Gambian authorities to increase solar energy deployment in The Gambia.

The collaboration results from the negotiations that began at COP26 on climate change in Glasgow, Scotland. The funding provided by MCC will accelerate Gambia’s electrification process and its clean energy transition.

According to Gambia’s Minister of Finance and Economic Affairs, Mambury Njie, “this project will help reduce poverty and promote sustainable economic growth through more reliable and clean electricity. It will also help the country meet its commitments to reduce greenhouse gas emissions”.

MCC also signed a memorandum of understanding with Burkina Faso and Ivory Coast in June 2021 and a cooperation agreement with the West African Power Pool (WAPP) for energy interconnection between these two West African countries.
