- Ghana’s electricity utility requires over half a billion dollars to fix transmission challenges.
The Ghana Grid Company Limited (GRIDCo) has announced that the utility needs US$526 million to upgrade the country’s old power transmission infrastructure. In addition, the utility noted that it would require significant patient investments over four years to bring total improvement and reliability to electricity transmission and supply across the country.
CEO GRIGCo, Ebenezer Essienyi, said, “If government decides to give us a billion dollars today, we cannot take out all the lines at the same time to reconstruct. It needs to be planned and phased; that is what we need to do to improve the reliability and quality of supply to Ghanaians.”
Essienyi spoke during a customer experience forum organised by Volta River Authority (VRA) in Accra. He noted that urgent investment from the government and patience from consumers are of equal essence to bring improvement. He also revealed the government’s commitment of USD$526 million to rehabilitate poor transmission infrastructure.
