- The US African Development Foundation (USADF) is launching a call for proposals for African off-grid energy providers.
- These companies have until February 12 2023, to apply.
The US government agency has just launched a call for proposals under the Off-Grid Energy Challenge. This initiative aims to increase electricity generation for unserved/underserved African communities through sustainable business model solutions. Companies contributing to electrification via off-grid systems can obtain a grant from the US African Development Foundation (USADF).
Only private companies and African-owned or led organizations are eligible for the USADF Off-Grid Energy Challenge. Benin, Burkina Faso, Burundi, Ivory Coast, Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), Kenya, Liberia, Malawi, Mauritania, Niger, Nigeria, Rwanda, Senegal, Somalia, South Sudan, Tanzania, Uganda, and Zambia have issued expressions of interest.
The request for proposals is open until February 12, 2023. Companies may be eligible for a $250,000 grant from the USADF. This initiative is consistent with the United States of America’s initiatives to support Africa’s electrification. This is also true of Power Africa, launched in 2013 during the administration of former US President Barack Obama.
The Health Electrification and Telecommunications Alliance (HETA) was launched a few weeks ago as part of this initiative implemented by the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) to provide access to electricity to at least 10,000 health centres in Africa.
