Uzbekistan Discovers Major Oil, Gas Reserves in Ustyurt Plateau

  • Uzbekistan’s Ustyurt Plateau holds up to 100 million tons of oil and 35 billion cubic meters of gas, poised to end energy imports and boost industrial growth.
  • SOCAR-led development uses modern technologies, may involve BP, and enhances Uzbekistan’s energy independence and regional influence.

Uzbekistan discovered large oil and gas reserves on its Ustyurt Plateau, officials said, marking a significant shift in the country’s energy sector. The discovery could make Uzbekistan self-sufficient and a regional energy player.

Uzbekneftegaz and Azerbaijan’s SOCAR signed a cooperation agreement in August 2024 and a production sharing deal in July 2025. These agreements allowed SOCAR to provide technology, expertise, and investment for exploration and extraction.

Meanwhile, President Shavkat Mirziyoyev announced in September 2025 that preliminary estimates show up to 100 million tons of oil and 35 billion cubic meters of gas. Uzbekistan’s hydrocarbon production had fallen over the past two decades, dropping to 490,000 tons by October 2025 from 585,000 tons in 2023.

Additionally, SOCAR utilised modern deep-drilling and 3D seismic technologies to achieve the breakthrough. Officials said the project could fully meet domestic energy needs and support industrial growth.

Furthermore, Uzbekistan plans to invest $2 billion over the next three to five years. The first phase will focus on drilling and seismic surveys. Later, the project will build pipelines, processing facilities, and possibly a new refinery. The first well is expected to start production by 2030.

The discovery also attracted multinational interest. British Petroleum is reportedly considering involvement. Analysts said large-scale production could shift Central Asia’s energy balance and boost Uzbekistan’s regional influence.

SOCAR’s role also strengthens Azerbaijan’s strategic position in Central Asia and aligns with regional integration initiatives.
