Varberg Energi Partners with OX2 for Offshore Renewable Projects

  • Varberg Energi will procure electricity from OX2’s 400-MW Galene offshore renewable projects.
  • The agreement includes PPAs for the wind farm and potential off-take deals for PV projects in Halland County.
  • OX2 will start constructing the Galene wind farm in 2026 and aim to complete it by 2028/2029.

Varberg Energi has entered a preliminary agreement with OX2 AB to purchase electricity from OX2’s 400-MW Galene offshore renewable projects on Sweden’s western coast. Announced on Monday, this intent agreement sets the stage for power purchase agreements (PPAs).

The deal includes plans for a PPA for the offshore wind park and a potential off-take arrangement for one or more photovoltaic (PV) projects in Halland County, Western Sweden.

The Galene wind farm will lie about 22 km (13.7 mi) offshore from Varberg in Halland County. As part of the broader 1.7-GW Galatea-Galene project, which OX2 co-owns with Ingka Investments, Galene represents a significant addition to Sweden’s renewable energy infrastructure.

The Swedish government approved the 400-MW Galene project in May 2023, allowing OX2 to install up to 21 wind turbines. These turbines are expected to produce approximately 1.7 TWh annually.

The larger Galatea-Galene project combines the Galene offshore wind farm with the Galatea segment, which includes additional onshore and offshore installations. This initiative aims to increase renewable energy capacity along Sweden’s western coast substantially.

OX2 plans to start constructing the Galene offshore wind farm in 2026 and aims to complete it by 2028 or 2029. Once operational, the wind farm will significantly enhance Sweden’s renewable energy supply, supporting national and regional clean energy objectives.

Varberg Energi and OX2’s collaboration highlights their mutual commitment to advancing sustainable energy resources in the region. They intend to strengthen energy security and promote sustainability in western Sweden through the forthcoming PPAs and the integration of PV projects in Halland County.
