- Danish company Vestas Wind Systems will install the wind turbines for the Brandvalley, Rietkloof and Wolf wind farms in South Africa.
- The order is placed by Cape Town, South Africa-based independent power producer (IPP) Red Rocket.
South Africa awards a fresh order to Vestas Wind Systems. The independent power producer (IPP) Red Rocket will outfit three wind farms with wind turbines from a company based in Aarhus, Denmark. The wind farms being constructed in the Eastern and Western Cape, Brandvalley, Rietkloof, and Wolf, will have a combined capacity of 373 MW.
Vestas will supply and install 64 V150-4.5 MW turbines, 12 V163-4.5 MW turbines, and five Enventus V162-6.2 MW turbines as part of the agreement. A 15-year “Active Output Management 5000 (AOM 5000)” contract will also see the Henrik Andersen-led company maintain the three wind farms.
The Brandvalley, Rietkloof, and Wolf wind farms were awarded to the Cape Town, South Africa-based IPP in the 5th round of the Renewable Energy Independent Power Producer Procurement Programme (REIPPPP).
Red Rocket estimates that the Brandvalley, Rietkloof, and Wolf wind farms will be able to generate 1,500 GWh of clean electricity annually once they are operational, which will help lower the carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions related to electricity generation in South Africa. Vestas, which will be responsible for carrying out these projects, has a long history in South Africa.
For instance, the Electricité de France (EDF) group subsidiary Wesley-Ciskei Wind Farm (34.5 MW) was constructed in the Eastern Cape Province by the Danish business for EDF Renouvelables. For the Italian IPP Enel Green Power, Vestas also provided the Soetwater and Karusa wind farms in the Western Cape, which have a combined capacity of 294 MW. Vestas has 1,300 MW of total installed or under construction in South Africa.
