Waaree Energies Ltd. has launched India’s largest solar cell gigafactory, a 5.4 GW facility in Chikhli, Gujarat. The plant strengthens India’s push for renewable energy and domestic manufacturing under Atmanirbhar Bharat.
The 150-acre facility, with 101 acres of built-up area, hosted a high-profile unveiling event. Gujarat Chief Minister Bhupendrabhai Patel, Minister of New and Renewable Energy Pralhad Joshi, and Minister of Water C. R. Paatil attended the event. The project reinforces the government’s goal to reduce reliance on solar imports.
Waaree Energies stated that the plant features cutting-edge solar cell technology and focuses on precision engineering and innovation. The factory will support national solar projects and drive India’s progress toward its 500 GW renewable energy goal by 2030.
The plant will generate over 9,500 direct jobs and around 30,000 indirect jobs. This aligns with Gujarat’s strategy to emerge as a key player in the solar value chain. The factory will produce critical components such as solar cells and modules.
The gigafactory will boost India’s role in global solar manufacturing. Waaree Energies plans to expand its presence in international markets. The facility will significantly reduce dependence on imported solar cells, particularly from China.
As India advances its renewable energy infrastructure, this plant marks a significant step toward energy self-sufficiency. The launch showcases India’s growing solar sector and its commitment to clean energy.
