Walmart Chile announced on Thursday that it has signed an agreement with energy trader Copec EMOAC, which will enable it to power approximately 80 per cent of its national operations with 100 per cent renewable energy.

Beginning in March 2026, Copec EMOAC will supply over 500 GWh of electricity annually generated from solar, wind, and energy storage systems to Walmart Chile’s operations.

The agreement covers the electricity needs of its network of Lider, Express de Lider, SuperBodega aCuenta, and Central Mayorista stores, along with three distribution centres and its dough and meat production plant, the retailer said.

According to Walmart Chile’s projections, the contract will reduce its annual carbon footprint by more than 100,000 tonnes of CO2, an environmental impact equivalent to removing 72,678 cars from circulation each year.

“[T]his agreement brings us closer to our major goal of having 100 per cent of our energy mix come from renewable sources by 2035,” said Macarena Garay, Walmart Chile’s finance and real estate manager.

The company’s broader target is to become a regenerative enterprise by 2040, Garay added.

The latest agreement expands Walmart Chile’s energy partnership with Copec, which includes prior projects like the installation of photovoltaic systems and high-efficiency smart motor integration across 86 stores.
