- Company to supply 50 MW/100 MWh energy storage system for the UK utility’s battery project.
Wartsila Corp, a Finnish technology group, has announced that it will supply a 50 MW/100 MWh energy storage system to SSE Plc for the UK utility’s first battery project in Salisbury, Wiltshire in South West England.
The project is expected to commence operations by September 2023 and will be the first battery connected directly to the transmission grid by SSE’s new solar and battery division. SSE acquired purchase development rights for the project in the summer of 2021.
“Today is a key milestone for SSE as we build out our first battery storage project at Salisbury, but it is also just the beginning of a multi-GW pipeline of solar and battery projects to come,” SSE’s director of solar and battery Richard Cave-Bigley stated, adding that battery storage will have a key role in supporting UK decarbonisation.
According to Wartsila, the order was booked in April, and the company will be delivering its fully integrated, modular energy storage system GridSolv Quantum and its energy management software for the project. Wartsila also noted that it is currently installing energy storage systems of similar sizes across the UK.
