Wisconsin Approves 298MW of New Wind, Solar Projects in US

  • The Public Service Commission of Wisconsin (PSC) approved the construction of the 118-MW Badger Hollow wind farm and the 180-MW Whitewater solar park.
  • The projects, worth over USD 214 million combined, will generate enough power to supply more than 51,000 homes annually.

The Public Service Commission of Wisconsin (PSC) has approved constructing two renewable energy projects that will add 298 MW of combined wind and solar capacity to the state’s power mix.

During its latest meeting, the PSC granted public convenience and necessity certificates for the 118-MW Badger Hollow wind farm and the 180-MW Whitewater solar photovoltaic (PV) park.

Chicago-based Invenergy LLC will develop Badger Hollow, featuring 19 wind turbines spread across Iowa and Grant Counties, costing about USD 64 million (EUR 54.5 million). The PSC determined that the project meets all state requirements related to sound, shadow flicker, and decommissioning and will not harm environmental values. Once operational, the wind farm will generate enough electricity to power roughly 30,000 homes annually.

Meanwhile, Whitewater Solar LLC, a subsidiary of DE Shaw Renewable Investments (DESRI), received approval to build a 180-MW solar park across 1,000 acres in Jefferson and Walworth Counties. The PSC issued the approval with conditions to guide the construction phase.

DESRI plans to invest up to USD 150 million in the Whitewater project, producing enough energy to meet the annual electricity needs of over 21,500 homes.

Together, the two projects mark another step in Wisconsin’s clean energy expansion, as the state diversifies its energy portfolio and reduces carbon emissions.
