The Board of Directors of the World Bank Group has approved $142 million for clean energy integration in  Zanzibar’s electricity grid. The International Development Association (IDA) will provide a credit of $117 million, while the Clean Technology Fund (CTF) will provide a loan of  $22 million and a $3 million grant.

The funds will be used to implement the Zanzibar Energy Sector Access and Transformation Project (Zesta), which is being implemented by the Zanzibar Ministry of Water, Energy and Minerals and Zanzibar Electricity Corporation (Zeco).

Under the project, the Zanzibar government will develop the archipelago’s first utility-scale solar PV plant. The plant will have a capacity of 18MWp and will be situated in the Makunduchi area, on the main island of Unguja. Zeco will construct an interconnection line to the grid for $16.5 million.

The Zanzibar authorities intend to deploy a 40 MWh battery storage system connected to a 132 kV substation to stabilise the archipelago’s power grid. The installation of the electricity storage unit is expected to cost $17 million. This will be the beginning of the clean energy integration into Zanzibar’s energy grid.
