World Bank to Support Power Infrastructure Development in Pakistan

  • The World Bank is assisting in energy efficiency and conservation programmes.
  • The World Bank signed two agreements with Pakistan to lend $500 million for project development.

On Monday, The government of Pakistan, following a meeting between the World Bank delegation and Minister for Energy Khurram Dastgir, will receive over $3 billion from World Bank to develop infrastructure in the power sector. The World Bank is to assist in energy efficiency and conservation programmes and helps provinces install solar projects.

Dastgir informed the delegation that the government had taken “tough and difficult decisions” in the power sector to increase electricity prices, which he said were “politically difficult”, but the government was committed to ensuring sustainability in the energy sector and providing “relief to the common man”. 

The Minister appreciated the World Bank for recognising the challenges faced by the country and the difficult decisions taken in the wake of it and also briefed the delegation on the CASA-1000 and Dasu power projects. In addition, the World Bank signed two agreements with Pakistan to lend $500 million to fund Punjab Resilient and Inclusive Agriculture Transformation Project worth $200 million and the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Accessibility Project worth $300 million.
