- Yan McPherson of the EIC praised the comprehensive UAE clean energy strategy, highlighting $2.16 billion in new renewable projects planned for 2023-2024.
- The UAE aims to produce 1.4 million tonnes of hydrogen annually by 2031 and has allocated $54 billion for renewable energy investments under its “Energy Strategy 2050.
Yan McPherson, Regional Director for the Middle East and Africa at the Energy Industries Council (EIC), praised the UAE’s swift advancements in clean energy. He emphasised the country’s comprehensive strategy integrating solar, wind, green hydrogen, and carbon capture technologies, positioning the UAE as a frontrunner in the global transition to sustainable energy.
In an interview with the Emirates News Agency (WAM), McPherson noted the UAE’s strong commitment to expanding its renewable energy portfolio. Seven new projects worth $2.16 billion are set to launch between the second half of 2023 and the first half of 2024. These initiatives encompass various renewable technologies, including energy from waste and geothermal energy.
By the end of this year, the UAE is expected to have 13 solar power projects operational, contributing 10.6 GW to the national energy grid by 2024. McPherson highlighted the UAE’s year-round solar potential, which supports the country’s ambitions to increase investments in solar energy and meet its clean energy targets on schedule.
The UAE also aims to produce 1.4 million tonnes of hydrogen annually by 2031, positioning itself as a global leader in green and blue hydrogen production. This goal aligns with the UAE’s vision to become a significant player in the hydrogen market, focusing on large-scale projects and innovative technologies to promote hydrogen as a sustainable energy source.
Additionally, McPherson pointed to the UAE’s “Energy Strategy 2050,” which outlines a diverse energy mix and allocates a substantial budget of $54 billion (AED 200 billion) for renewable energy projects until 2030. This investment reflects the UAE’s commitment to fostering a sustainable future.
In conclusion, McPherson stated that these strategic initiatives provide a clear pathway for increasing the nation’s reliance on renewable energy and advancing hydrogen technologies, reinforcing the UAE’s role as a leader in the global energy transition.
