Zara Owner Sets 2040 Net-Zero Emissions Target

  • Inditex has brought forward its net-zero emissions goal to 2040 from 2050.
  • The company also plans to deploy wind to power its headquarters in Spain.

Spanish clothing company Inditex, owners of fashion brand Zara has brought forward its net-zero emissions goal to 2040 from 2050. The company plans only to utilize clean energy in its operations in 2022. The company noted that it had already achieved its 2025 target of 80 per cent clean energy in its direct operations last year. In Spain, the company utilises 100 per cent clean energy.

At a shareholders’ meeting last week, the company announced several measures it aims to take to ensure environmental sustainability in its business operations. Inditex has also committed to utilising only sustainable cotton by 2023 from 2025 and intends to reduce its water use in its supply chain by 25 per cent by 2025. Inditex also plans to sell excess energy generated by its own wind turbines in Spain.  The company plans to deploy a wind turbine array at the outer harbour of the Port of La Coruna, northwest Spain which will power the company’s headquarters.
