- ZACIRE has designed a solar-powered electric vehicle.
- The vehicle utilises DC electric motors and rechargeable batteries.
The Zaria Academy Centre for Innovation and Renewable Energy (ZACIRE) has designed and constructed a solar-powered electric vehicle. The vehicle dubbed Munyegal Z20E has been awarded a patent by the Federal Ministry of Industry, Trade and Investment,
According to the chairman of Zaria Academy, Dr Haroun Adamu, the Munyegal Z20E was designed and constructed by a team at Zaria Academy to address the economic challenge posed by the rising cost of petrol and be a part of the global transition to clean energy. Dr Adamu stated that the car was built with 90 per cent metal as a teaching aid and is propelled by DC (direct current) electric motors using electric energy in rechargeable batteries as a power source.
The Zaria Academy implemented the electric car project with the Nigerian government via the National Automotive Design and Development Council (NADDC). The NADDC recently inaugurated solar-powered electric vehicle charging stations at the Usmanu Danfodiyo University in Sokoto and the University of Lagos; a third is set to be unveiled at the University of Nigeria, Nsukka.
