Zimbabwe’s Energy and Power Development Minister, Zhemu Soda, has stated that the Hwange 7 and 8 expansion project will add an additional 600MW to the country’s national grid network. Speaking at the commissioning, Soda stated that the Hwange 7 and 8 expansion project is expected to come on board in 2022.

“There is no way the economy will grow without growth in electricity supply. Therefore, we are anticipating increased generation at Hwange Power Station with the Hwange 7 and 8 expansion project expected on the grid by July and the other one in September 2022.” Soda stated.

The US$1,5 billion Hwange power project is being constructed by Chinese firm Sinohydro and involves the construction of two units of 300MW, each adding a total of 600MW to the national grid.
