- Zimbabwe suffers from power outages due to network failure
- Imports from South Africa caused an electrical surge
- Grid restoration in progress
Zimbabwe’s national grid collapsed on Monday due to an electrical surge in its network from South Africa’s electricity imports. The grid was overloaded, causing generating plants in the country to fail. The grid suffered a collapse leading to a nationwide blackout. Kariba hydropower plant, as well as the Hwange plant, were affected by the collapse.
Zimbabwe faces power outages until the restoration of the grid is complete. While electricity generation has been restored at the Kariba power plant, engineers are currently working to restore output at the Hwange plant.
The Minister of Energy Soda Zhemu has said the country currently faces a deficit with demand on the increase. ”Demand is outweighing internal power-generation capacity”, Zhemu said.
