- ZESA Holdings to import 400MW from Zambia and Mozambique
In its bid to improve capacity, the Zimbabwe Electricity Supply Authority (ZESA) Holdings will import up to 400MW from neighbouring Zambia and Mozambique as part of its plans to end the current power crisis in the country.
In an interview, Executive Chairman Sydney Gata stated that the delay in finalising the electricity imports was due to the failure of the Ministry of Finance to sign the Independent Power Producer (IPP) implementation agreement. The agreement aims to expedite the development of Independent Power Projects (IPPs) in the country.
“We are importing because the Government (Ministry of Finance) has been sitting on an implementation agreement for IPPs for over two years now; we should not be importing,” Gata said.
“We are going to get 400 MW from Zambia, Mozambique, and repairs currently underway at Kariba South, which should be completed in December,” he added.
Gata stated that ZESA had negotiated for 280MW and 180MW from Zambia and Mozambique, respectively.
