Zimbabwe state utility to review tariff upwards
- ZETDC cannot meet debt obligations
- Tariff review necessary to promote renewable energy says, Minister
Zimbabwean Minister of Energy and Power Development, Zhemu Soda says, a review of electricity tariffs is inevitable. Mr Soda has said, a tariff review would ensure operational stability of the Zimbabwe Electricity Supply Authority (ZESA). ZESA is seeking an upward review of electricity tariffs from US$c7,5 to US$c10 per unit.
The state-owned utility currently imports electricity from neighbouring Mozambique and South Africa. “As you might be aware, we are importing power from outside the country, especially during peak hours and more so during this time of the year in winter”, Mr Soda said. “In order for us to achieve what we are envisioning to provide adequate power and sustainable electricity, there is a need for tariffs to be reviewed”, he added.
The Zimbabwe Electricity Transmission and Distribution Company (ZETDC) has failed to meet its debt obligations due to the low tariff levels.
