The Zimbabwe Electricity Transmission Distribution Company (ZETDC) has blamed recent power outages in Bulawayo on the activities of electrical vandals who have continued to vandalise copper cables from its network infrastructure Hwange District Manager, Engr. Clayton Sakutukwa disclosed.

“Our major problem has been vandalism and it has been at its peak now. People are taking down our transformers and stealing copper wires inside.” Sakutukwa said.

“The problem is very rampant to such an extent that on a single night, we are hit at up to seven spots. Recently the thieves hit Burnside and Tshabalala among other areas. It is affecting service delivery,” he added.

Sakutukwa urged residents to report cases of suspected vandalism and noted that the ZETDC was working with residents on creating awareness of the dangers of electrical equipment vandalisation.

“We are engaging residents continuously, and we are communicating to them that this is your infrastructure, this is everyone’s infrastructure,” Sakutukwa said.
