- ZESA fined for electrocution of a young girl
- The victim came in contact with an 11kV conductor
- Court grants victim $280,000
Zimbabwe Electricity Transmission and Distribution Company (ZETDC) has been fined $280,000 for failing to fix an electrical issue that led to the death of a 13-year-old girl who was electrocuted at Movern Farm. The fault had been reported to ZETDC’s Chegutu depot eight days before the fatal accident but was not rectified. As a result, the victim was electrocuted when she came in contact with the hanging 11kV conductor.
Zimbabwe Energy Regulatory Authority (ZERA) took ZETDC to court for failure to rectify an infrastructural condition that posed an electrical risk to the public. The failure to address the problem by ZETDC contravened the Electricity (Public Safety) Regulation Statutory Instrument 177 of 2018.
The court imposed a fine of $280 000 against ZETDC to be paid by July 30th. Failure to do so will result in sanctions.
