- Zimbabwe to embark on grid expansion in 2022
- ZERA implements a 12.3% tariff increase
Following the January increase in electricity tariffs, the Executive Chairman of the Zimbabwe Electricity Supply Authority (ZESA), Dr Sydney Gata, has announced the plans to increase grid capacity in 2022. This comes as the Zimbabwe Energy Regulatory Authority (ZERA) approved a 12.3% tariff increase which took effect on 1st January 2022.
“We want to make sure that we deliver high-quality services, and this can be achieved with a proper budget and also be able to import electricity, that is the reason why we have increased the tariffs as the year starts,” Gata said.
In addition, Gata stated that the country would embark on comprehensive system maintenance to improve grid performance. Gata stated that the country would embark on a grid expansion project despite budgetary challenges.
“The challenge is on the budgetary deficits to afford the installation of electricity infrastructure. We are going to embark on an expansion project where 300,000 residential houses are going to be on the electricity supply grid this year,” Gata said.
