Zungeru Plant to Commence Operation in December

Abubakar Sani-Bello, the governor of Niger state, has announced that the first megawatt from the Zungeru hydroelectric project is expected in December this year. The project is still under construction and the first turbine is expected to be commissioned in December, with a capacity of 700MW.

The announcement was made after local authorities visited the project site for inspection. It is estimated that the remaining two turbines will be commissioned in 2022. Governor Abubakar Sani-Bello stated, ‘This is a milestone for us in Niger State. It is to be celebrated, we hope that when the project is delivered, it will enhance power generation, economic activities and many other things.

Construction on the plant began eight years ago and the plant will commence operations with a dam which will be built on the Kaduna river. The project cost $1.3 billion, 75% of which was gotten as a loan from the Exim Bank of China. The remaining 25% was provided by the federal government.
