Ghana’s Kofa Secures $8m to Expand Battery-Swapping Network

  • Ghana’s Kofa raised $8 million to deploy 6,000 batteries and 100 swap stations, promoting clean energy and electric mobility.
  • Backed by PASH Global, Shell Foundation, and the UK, Kofa plans to expand into Kenya and Togo.

Ghanaian clean-tech startup Kofa has secured $8 million through a special purpose vehicle (SPV) to expand its battery-swapping infrastructure, accelerating the shift to electric mobility and clean energy adoption across West Africa.

Impact investor PASH Global led the funding round, with strong support from the Shell Foundation and the UK Government’s Transforming Energy Access (TEA) initiative. Kofa will use the funds to deploy 6,000 portable batteries and establish up to 100 swap stations across Ghana, giving users reliable and affordable access to clean electricity.

Kofa’s network currently powers electric two-wheelers, small businesses, and households, helping to reduce reliance on fossil fuels. While the startup will continue to oversee battery system management, PASH will handle the deployment and maintenance of the swap stations.

“This initiative marks a major move toward cleaner, more sustainable energy in Ghana,” said Erik Nygard, CEO of Kofa Technologies. “Backed by our partners, we’re laying the groundwork for long-term benefits to local communities and businesses.”

Kofa’s expansion aligns with its broader vision of building a sustainable energy ecosystem throughout West Africa. The company also intends to scale its operations to Kenya and Togo soon.

Its innovative battery-as-a-service model, operated through a user-friendly mobile and web app, allows customers to easily swap batteries at designated stations. The portable battery network supports various applications and provides clean, accessible energy to underserved users.

With this funding boost, Kofa is now well-positioned to play a pivotal role in advancing clean energy access, enhancing energy resilience, and driving sustainable development across the region.
