Serbia, KHNP Sign MoUs on Nuclear Energy, Hydrogen Cooperation

  • Serbia signed MoUs with Korea Hydro & Nuclear Power to boost cooperation on nuclear energy training and pilot green hydrogen projects.
  • The deals aim to build Serbian expertise, explore hydrogen potential, and strengthen clean energy ties with South Korea.

Serbia and Korea Hydro & Nuclear Power (KHNP) signed two memorandums of understanding (MoUs) in Belgrade to boost cooperation in nuclear energy and hydrogen development. State Secretary at the Ministry of Mining and Energy Sonja Vlahović and KHNP President and CEO Joo-ho Whang signed the agreements during the Korea-Serbia Strategic Energy Development Forum, organised by the ministry and the Korea Trade-Investment Promotion Agency (KOTRA).

The nuclear MoU commits KHNP to support Serbia in training personnel, exchanging technical expertise, and strengthening regulatory and safety frameworks. The hydrogen MoU sets the stage for pilot projects, joint assessments, and full-cycle cooperation in hydrogen production, supply, and human resource development.

Furthermore, Vlahović said Serbia views nuclear power as a potential pillar of its future energy security and clean energy transition. She stressed the importance of partnering with global leaders to accelerate expertise and investment, highlighting Serbia’s strong interest in hydrogen technologies.

Meanwhile, Whang described the partnership as a driver of sustainable growth and said demonstration hydrogen projects could anchor Serbia’s emerging hydrogen industry.

The forum featured presentations from KHNP, the Ministry of Mining and Energy, state utility Elektroprivreda Srbije (EPS), the Vinča Institute for Nuclear Sciences, and KOTRA. Officials outlined Serbia’s Energy Development Strategy through 2040, EPS’s hydrogen study, and Vinča’s long-term vision for a nuclear power plant by 2040.

The signing ceremony drew senior Serbian officials, including Minister of Science Bela Balint, and South Korean representatives such as Ambassador Kim Hyung Tae and KOTRA Europe Director General Kim Hyeon-cheol.
