Germany Unveils 10MWh BESS to Maximise On-Site Solar Power

  • BayWa r.e., SOCOMEC and Rheinland Solar have commissioned a 10MWh battery energy storage system at a logistics and cold storage facility in Germany.
  • The project will increase on-site solar self-consumption, reduce peak electricity demand and improve energy flexibility.

BayWa r.e. Solar Energy Systems GmbH, in partnership with SOCOMEC and Rheinland Solar GmbH, has deployed a 10MWh battery energy storage system (BESS) at a logistics and cold storage facility in Mutterstadt, Germany, to maximise on-site solar energy use and improve operational flexibility.

The partners launched the project in October 2025 and completed the delivery of two SOCOMEC SMARTSYS M5000 battery energy storage systems at the end of June 2026.

Each turnkey battery container delivers 2.5MW of power output and 5MWh of energy storage capacity. Together, the systems provide a combined output of 5MW and 10MWh of storage capacity.

Furthermore, the facility already operates a 3MWp photovoltaic (PV) system configured as a zero-feed-in installation, which prevents operators from exporting excess electricity to the grid. Consequently, the site previously had to curtail surplus solar generation during periods of low electricity demand.

The new battery energy storage system now enables the facility to store excess solar electricity and use it when energy demand increases. As a result, the installation will increase on-site solar self-consumption, reduce peak electricity demand and improve power supply reliability for the logistics and cold storage operations.

Meanwhile, Sabine Ruoff-Sixt, Head of Commercial and Industrial (C&I) and Utility Solutions at BayWa r.e. Solar Energy Systems GmbH, said battery energy storage systems have become essential for businesses seeking to maximise the value of self-generated solar electricity.

She added that the Mutterstadt project demonstrates how companies can integrate photovoltaic generation with battery storage to build more efficient, flexible and resilient energy systems.

Meanwhile, the companies confirmed that the project marks the deployment of SOCOMEC’s 500th energy storage system worldwide. They described the milestone as evidence of the company’s growing presence in the global energy storage market and its continued collaboration with BayWa r.e. Solar Energy Systems GmbH and Rheinland Solar GmbH on commercial and industrial battery storage projects.
