Powering Prosperity: Nigeria’s Energy Reforms

  • The Pi-CNG initiative supports sustainable, cleaner energy for households, transportation, and industry.
  • Electricity Act reforms unlock private investment, encourage off-grid solutions, and improve state collaboration.

Nigeria’s energy sector is crucial to the country’s long-term economic growth and social stability. Policymakers emphasise that tackling energy supply challenges is essential for national prosperity. At the 8th Valuechain Annual Lecture Series in Abuja, industry experts gathered under the theme: “Growth in the Energy, Oil and Gas Sector: The Nexus Between Economic Development, Social Impact and Public Perception.”

The Permanent Secretary of the Federal Ministry of Petroleum Resources, Emeka Vitalis Obi, highlighted the critical role of energy. He said, “Energy is the lifeblood of industrialisation, the backbone of productivity, and a key driver of employment.” Obi added, “Every sector, from manufacturing to agriculture, transportation, and digital infrastructure, depends on reliable and affordable energy.” He also stressed reshaping public perception through data-driven clarity rather than controversy.

The Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, reinforced the government’s commitment to reforms. Represented by Dr Mohammed Bulama, he explained that President Bola Tinubu’s administration prioritises a modern, efficient energy sector. These reforms focus on attracting investment, promoting industrial growth, creating jobs, and ensuring economic stability.

Stakeholders also noted the importance of adapting to global energy trends to maintain Nigeria’s competitive edge. Dr Bulama summarised, “Sustainable development balances economic reform, social impact, and public trust.”

By implementing these reforms, Nigeria’s energy sector can ensure a reliable, modern, and resilient power system. This will strengthen the economy, attract investments, create jobs, and support long-term national prosperity.
