Lagos Solar Training Scheme Targets Youth Employment

  • Bashir has launched a solar training programme designed to equip 100 youths with practical installation and renewable energy business skills in Lagos.
  • The initiative focuses on long-term economic empowerment through technical capacity building rather than cash-based support.

A Lagos-based entrepreneur, Oluwadamilare Bashir, has launched a solar empowerment training programme in Ikeja. The programme aims to equip 100 youths with practical skills in solar installation and renewable energy business.

The initiative targets residents aged 18 to 40. It aims to address youth unemployment and electricity reliability challenges in Nigeria through technical skills training.

At the launch event, Bashir said the programme focuses on practical learning. He said the initiative prioritises skills training over financial handouts. He added that the approach prepares participants for long-term income generation and business creation.

Bashir said the programme aims to build a pool of skilled solar technicians and energy entrepreneurs. He said these professionals will help meet rising demand for alternative power solutions across Ikeja and nearby areas. He described the initiative as a long-term capacity development programme.

To ensure quality delivery, organisers will run the training in batches. The first group of 20 trainees will begin training in March.

Furthermore, Bashir said solar technology provides a practical solution to two major challenges. He said the sector can create technical jobs while expanding access to clean electricity for homes and small businesses.

In addition, he linked the initiative to the broader economic vision of Bola Ahmed Tinubu. He said the programme supports enterprise development, innovation and inclusive economic growth. In addition, he commended grassroots youth engagement efforts led by Seyi Tinubu. He also acknowledged support from Lagos State government officials working on youth development.

Meanwhile, stakeholders have described the programme as a scalable model. They said similar schemes could expand to other communities across Lagos and beyond.

According to Bashir, the initiative will help restore dignity to skilled labour. He said the programme will also support small business growth. He added that it will prepare young people to participate in the evolving clean energy economy.
